À propos de l’œuvre
Pins contre un ciel rouge avec soleil couchant, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · December 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Pines at sunsetReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Large pines ravaged by the mistral stand out in front of an orange-yellow sky, reworked with pale green. At the very bottom, two women advance on a path: their small silhouettes measure the scale of the trunks which rise out of the frame.
Look at the work
Pines torn in front of the setting sun
The blue-gray trunks occupy the entire left edge and project their branches into the upper right corner. The needles are gathered in dark bouquets, sometimes reduced to a few black or green lines.
The orange disk of the sun appears between the trees, almost in the center. On the right, the yellow sky is covered with pink and green streaks; at the foot of the pines, two women in red and black follow a light path bordered by blue-purple shadows.
Van Gogh first judged his sky unsatisfactory then broke it with green touches: this visible correction gives the atmosphere its singular mixture of warmth and unease.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves this oil on canvas under KM 102.808. It dates from December 1889 and bears F652/JH1843.
Silhouettes shaped by the mistral
The pines are inclined, amputated and twisted. Their black branches do not decorate the sky: they physically restore the resistance of the trees to the violent wind of Provence.
The red sky turned yellow-green
Van Gogh announced pines against a red sky, but then returned to the atmosphere with a matte green tone. The pale green streaks soften the yellows and remain essential in the final state.
Two tiny figures close the scene
The women at the bottom are not incidental. The red of one responds to the sun and their small size transforms the pines into monumental architecture.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Pines in the Setting Sun is an oil on canvas measuring 91.5 × 72 cm, painted in December 1889. It bears KM 102.808, F652 and JH1843.
"Great ravaged pines"
Van Gogh wrote to his sister Willemien that he was working on large pine trees ravaged against a red sunset sky, a pattern observed despite the winter mistral.
A remotely corrected sky
Looking at his canvas, he felt that the effect was not working and added the green tone. Seen from a distance, this passage breaks and softens the colors of the sky.
