Les produits de la pêche, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Colorful houses on the banks of the canal in 1871 · Musée d'Orsay

Zaandam W183hand painted reproduction

The Zaandam Canal stretches under a blue sky punctuated by large white clouds. On the right, a row of green and red houses rises behind the trees; on the left, a bell tower dominates the darker buildings. Monet chooses a low viewpoint, close to the water, which gives the colorful facades and their reflections all their presence.

Look at the work

The houses of Zaandam respond to the reflections of the canal

The right bank follows a diagonal which begins near the viewer and leads towards the bell tower. Green gables, red roofs and brown trunks form a lively succession. Trees do not erase houses: their ocher leaves allow fragments of facade and sky to pass through.

The canal occupies the entire foreground. Monet places short white, pink, blue and brown touches which record the undulations rather than perfectly symmetrical reflections. A small dark boat, placed near the center, measures the width of the water and maintains movement towards the distance.

Dutch architecture becomes color: gables and roofs extend into the water through a mosaic of moving reflections.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A bank built diagonally

The embankment and houses narrow towards the center left. This perspective gives the canal great depth despite the absence of rigid architectural lines.

02

Gables as accents

Greens, reds and browns alternate between the trunks. Their rhythm distinguishes the houses while integrating them into the row of trees.

03

Water painted in short touches

The reflections do not copy each facade. They take the temperatures in small horizontals which make the surface vibrate.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the RF 1673 version of the Musée d'Orsay and shows the canvas in its frame. The file of 2,200 × 1,440 px is kept without enlargement, then converted into WebP.

Composition01

A huge sky above the canal

Clouds occupy almost the upper half and give light to the facades like water.

Color02

Gentle complements

The greens of the gables and foliage respond to the reds of the roofs; the blues of the sky temper the whole.

Matter03

A wider material in the sky

Clouds and sky are posed by beaches, trees by small touches, houses by firmer shapes and water by horizontal gestures.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay keeps this painting under inventory RF 1673; the Wildenstein catalog raisonné classifies it under number 183.

Title01

Also called Canal in Holland

The official notice associates this second title with the same canvas. The inventory title remains Zaandam.

Registration02

Signed lower left

The museum notes the signature "Claude Monet" in the lower left corner of the composition.

Collection03

Donation Étienne Moreau-Nélaton in 1906

Entering the national collections through the Moreau-Nélaton donation, the work was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the perspective of the bank and the succession of colored gables.
  • Differentiate the greens of houses from those of trees.
  • Construct water with short touches and not with a smooth mirror.
  • Maintain the clarity of the sky and the simple volume of large clouds.
