Look at the work

The river fills the frame and transforms the landscape into a moving surface

No sky or horizon is visible. The rocky bank occupies the upper strip; water enters through the entire width of the foreground and its foam lines converge to the right.

Blue, green, brown and purple intersect in the current. The rapids are built by touches of white and light blue, while the bank receives pinks, mauves and bright greens.

By removing the sky, Monet removes almost any ladder: water and rock become a field of colorful gestures with deliberately ambiguous depth.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A plunging point of view

Monet sets up his easel on the steep bank and looks directly towards the shoals. This position transforms the river into an inclined plane towards the viewer.

02

Foam as the main drawing

Clear lines do not follow a fixed outline; they separate, come together and mark the speed of the current on the stones.

03

An almost abstract composition

Without sky, tree or building, recognition of the place becomes secondary. The entire surface rests on the opposition between the dark movement of the water and the colored bank.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1239 is used. The real WebP measures 3,000 × 2,137 px and comes from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's high-definition open file, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve discontinuous foam trajectories

Whites must remain fragmented. A continuous line would give a decorative effect and lose natural turbulence.

Color02

Preserve greens and purples in water

Current isn't just blue. These colors make depths, rocks submerged and reflections changeable.

Matter03

Keep the bank in the upper part

Its small space reinforces diving. Enlarging it would shift attention from the river to the rock and change the radical framing of W1239.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Metropolitan Museum of Art documents Rapides sur la Petite Creuse in Fresselines, oil on canvas from 1889, 65.4 × 91.8 cm, signed and dated lower left, inventory 67.187.88 and Wildenstein 1239.

Version01

A second, almost identical canvas exists

The Met reports a very close view in a private collection. W1239 stands out for its precise framing, its white rapids and its colorful rocky shore.

Exposure02

Probably presented with Rodin in 1889

Monet includes numerous landscapes of the Creuse among the 145 paintings in his major joint exhibition with Auguste Rodin at the Georges Petit gallery.

Collection03

Legacy Adelaide Milton de Groot in 1967

The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art by bequest from the collector and has since been numbered 67.187.88.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1239 version
  • The viewpoint plunging without sky
  • The white lines of the rapids
  • The pink, green and purple rocky shore
