A horizon placed almost at the top
By reducing the sky to a narrow strip, Monet transforms the sea into a real main field. The foam can thus circulate around the rocks without interruption.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Belle-Île · 1886 · W1086
A monumental rocky needle stands in the center of a foam-covered sea, accompanied by a finer peak and dark reefs. The very high horizon barely reveals the sky, so much so that the ocean fills almost the entire painted surface. Made in Belle-Île in 1886, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm corresponds to Wildenstein 1086 and belongs to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen.

Look at the work
The large monolith is placed slightly to the left of the center. Its base disappears in the waves, while a second, narrower pinnacle creates a dark interval to its right. The reefs on the right edge and foreground close the stage around these two silhouettes.
The sea combines turquoise, blue, green and white in a tight network of touches. The rocks absorb brown, purple, green and some reds, then darken towards their base. The band of pinkish-blue sky remains calm above this movement.
The view does not dominate the sea: it is facing an active expanse of which the rocks are only the points of resistance.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
By reducing the sky to a narrow strip, Monet transforms the sea into a real main field. The foam can thus circulate around the rocks without interruption.
The large needle serves as an anchor for a very mobile surface. The small neighboring peak repeats its movement while creating measurable depth.
The actual view of the framed canvas shows the clear touches that intersect on the water and the colorful impastos that shape the rock without linear design.
Reference image
The sheet and product use a single real photograph of W1086, taken in front of the framed canvas à la Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Converted into a real WebP of 1,702 × 1,438 px, it retains its native definition.
Its mass must remain detailed by purples, greens and browns, without becoming a black silhouette.
Touches of foam should circulate around the rocks and maintain varied directions.
This small aperture gives the board its tension and distinguishes W1086 from several other versions of Port-Coton.
Documented benchmarks
The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek preserves this version of the Pyramids at Port-Coton, painted in 1886, measuring 60 × 73 cm and listed as Wildenstein 1086.
Installed for several weeks on the island, he is looking for points of view allowing the stability of the rock to be compared to rapid changes in wind, sea and light.
The main rock rises almost to the horizon and dominates a second thin peak. This device distinguishes it in particular from W1087, almost square and preserved in the Rau Collection.
The photograph taken on May 24, 2016 at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek documents the real appearance of the work, its scale and its framing. Photo credit: Marie Thérèse Hébert and Jean Robert Thibault, CC BY-SA 2.0.
