An overhanging viewpoint
Monet looks at the needles from the top of the coast. This height transforms the sea into a vast pictorial field and gives the main rock an almost vertical presence.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Port-Coton · 1886 · W1087
Seen from the cliff, a tall rocky needle rises amidst a rough blue-purple sea. Smaller points accompany it, while the very high horizon leaves only a narrow strip of pink and gray sky. Signed and dated 86 Claude Monet, this almost square oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 65.6 cm belongs to the Rau Collection for UNICEF and corresponds to Wildenstein 1087.

Look at the work
The large monolith is placed slightly to the left of the center and rises almost to the horizon. Secondary reefs draw an arc around it, from the lower edge to the right. The bird's eye view removes all human presence and reduces the sky to a minimum.
Blue, green, mauve and white roam the ocean surface. On the rocks, Monet superimposes brown, purple, red and dark green. Short, changing touches simultaneously render the roughness of the stone and the circulation of foam.
The almost square framing concentrates the confrontation: the rock rises, the sea spreads around it and the sky provides no escape.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet looks at the needles from the top of the coast. This height transforms the sea into a vast pictorial field and gives the main rock an almost vertical presence.
The Arp Museum brings together the bold framing, flattened surface and high horizon of Japanese prints collected by Monet, including views of Hiroshige rocks.
In Port-Coton, Monet painted the same needles in a wild sea, in the rain or in the sun. W1087 can be recognized by its square format and its large isolated rock in front of a narrow horizon.
Reference image
A single exact image of W1087 is used throughout the sheet and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 2,197 × 2,200 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.
Its verticality must remain the anchor point without becoming a uniform black shape.
The sea must occupy most of the image in order to maintain the dizziness of the viewpoint.
They warm up the violets and allow the stone to optically resist the blues of the ocean.
Documented benchmarks
The Arp Museum documents The Pyramids of Port-Coton, oil on canvas from 1886, 65.5 × 65.6 cm, signed and dated lower right and listed Wildenstein 1087.
In 1886, he set up his easel facing the wild coast and continued the pattern despite the wind and storms in order to study the changes in light on the sea and the needles.
Its proportions and the large central hand distinguish it in particular from W1084 and W1085, two horizontal versions of the same site.
The work is presented as part of the collection established by Gustav Rau and linked to UNICEF, at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck.
