Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

The Auvers PlainReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh embraces the Auvers countryside in an exceptionally panoramic canvas. Grindstones, wildflowers, furrows and undulating fields compose a succession of colors that stretches to the edge of the painting.

Look at the work

Fields built in successive waves

The vegetation in the foreground is dense and flowery. A light millstone stands on the left; a second, smaller and red-brown, responds to the right. Between them, the red of the poppies animates a large green mass.

In the center, a plowed field shows blue-gray rows that narrow towards the horizon. Around it, yellow and green crops follow the undulations of the terrain. Rare vertical trees give rhythm to this almost architectureless expanse.

The depth does not come from a central road, but from the superposition of colors and the gradual decrease of furrows.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F775/JH2038 canvas is distinguished by its proportions of 50 × 101 cm, its high horizon, its millstones and its central field covered with gray-blue furrows.

01

Waves of earth and color

Field boundaries are curved rather than straight. They give the plateau a continuous undulation which connects foreground and horizon.

02

A very close foreground

Flowers and foliage are cut off by the bottom edge. This framing places the viewer in the middle of the vegetation before suddenly opening the view.

03

Some verticals to measure space

The trees on the horizon punctuate the great horizontality. Their tiny size accentuates the width of the plain.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Plaine d'Auvers belongs to the Belvedere of Vienne under inventory 1007. This oil on linen canvas of 50 × 101 cm is cataloged F775 and JH2038.

Format

A double panoramic square

With a ratio close to two to one, the canvas belongs to the very elongated formats experienced by Van Gogh during his last weeks in Auvers.

Construction

Overlay strips

Flowers, millstones, furrows, fields and sky form successive horizontal zones. However, the curves of the crops prevent any rigidity.

Collection

Inventory 1007

The painting is kept at the Belvedere in Vienna, where it bears the number 1007. It is neither dated nor signed on the canvas.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must keep the finesse of the furrows, the transitions between the colored bands and the diversity of flowers across the entire width of the foreground.

  • The light millstone on the left and its blue shadow
  • The gray-blue rows of the central field
  • Red poppies and white flowers
  • The narrow strip of turquoise sky above the trees
