Plowman in a field, F625Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Under a pale sun, a peasant and his horse open a furrow in the enclosed field visible from the asylum. The foreground, almost entirely plowed, becomes a vast current of blue, green, purple and ocher.
Look at the work
Plowing transforms the land into colorful waves
The horse and the plowman are small, placed to the right of the central axis. In front of them, thick furrows cross and bend; yellow fragments of thatch and a few red accents interrupt the dark blues.
A horizontal strip of land separates the field from the poplars, the farm and the Alpilles. The yellow sun hangs in a water-green sky streaked with oblique lines, like a light from the very beginning of the day.
The small human figure does not control the landscape: it agrees with the movement of the earth, whose charged matter becomes the real subject of the painting.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Plowman in a field measures 50.3 × 64.9 cm. This work from early September 1889, cataloged F625/JH1768, is in a private collection.
An exceptionally dense foreground
The furrows occupy more than half of the canvas and are laid in long, loaded touches. Their changing direction creates both depth and agitation.
The plowman remains the measuring point
Its small silhouette and the horse indicate the scale of the terrain. The light yellow of the path around them opens up a breathable area in the dark mass of plowing.
A cold morning light
The yellow disk does not yet warm the turquoise sky. Blue mountains and thin poplars reinforce this impression of clear dawn after dark.

The return to painting after a crisis
Van Gogh began this landscape when he was able to rework after a long hiatus in the summer of 1889. He announced to Theo that he was painting the field again from his window.
Yellow stubble field being plowed
The painter describes the motif precisely: an expanse of yellow thatch that is turned over. The painting retains this contrast between golden bands and freshly opened earth.
A work given to his sister
Sent to Theo in December 1889, the painting was then given to Willemien van Gogh. It later remained in several private European and American collections.
