À propos de l’œuvre

La Pointe du Petit Ailly, temps gris, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1897 · Kreeger Museum 1971.7 · W1447

Pointe du Petit Ailly, gray weather, Kreeger W1447hand painted reproduction

The Petit Ailly promontory advances like a compact mass above a blue-gray sea. From a high point, Monet barely leaves a strip of sky and water around the cliff. A customs officer's house placed near the edge gives the measure of the relief, while greens, purples and browns make the surface of the land almost tactile.

Look at the work

Under a gray sky, the promontory fills the frame and pushes the small customs officer's house towards the seaside

The cliff extends diagonally from the lower left corner to the right summit. Its silhouette appears massive, but the interior is made up of very different areas: olive green in the foreground, gray purple in the hollows, warm brown on the land and lighter touches around the house.

The sea is reduced to a cold strip which goes around the promontory. The sky, paler, occupies even less space and carries the weight of gray weather announced by the title. This high, almost unstable framing places the viewer at the edge of the cliff and reinforces the monumentality of the terrain.

Gray weather does not remove color: it tightens the range and makes greens, purples and promontory lands more sensitive.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A land mass that dominates the format

The cliff covers most of the surface. Its outline must remain flexible, while internal variations prevent the pattern from becoming a block without depth.

02

Customs as a measuring point

The tiny house indicates height and distance. Its light walls and red-brown roof must remain visible, but always subordinate to the movement of the land.

03

Very thin strips of sea and sky

The blue-gray of the water and the pale sky open the left edge just enough. Their small surface area is essential for the feeling of compression and the plunging viewpoint.

Composition01

An ascending diagonal

The promontory rises from left to right and leads towards the house. This slope gives movement to a composition where no character creates action.

Color02

A muted but diverse range

Moss green, brown, purple, blue gray and cream respond to each other under the covered light. Colors must remain distinct despite their low saturation.

Matter03

Touches that follow the relief

Short gestures change orientation depending on slopes and vegetation. They model the ground without resorting to a closed design or black shadows.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern the painting of the Kreeger Museum, inventory 1971.7 and Wildenstein 1447.

Identification01

Kreeger Museum 1971.7, W1447

This oil on canvas from 1897 measures 29 × 36 inches, or approximately 73.7 × 91.4 cm. It is signed and dated "Claude Monet 97" at the bottom left.

A countryside on the Normandy coast02

Monet returned to Pourville in early 1897

The museum places this view in the countryside around Pourville and Petit Ailly. Monet adopts a very high point, at the edge of the relief, to bring the mass of the cliff into the foreground.

A vestige linked to maritime control03

The small building is a former customs officer's house

The Kreeger notice recalls that these posts had been established during the Napoleonic era to monitor the coast. The house was then used by local fishermen.
