Look at the work

Low tide opens up a long space between the cliff and the open sea

The cliff occupies the left third then descends towards an open beach. The panoramic format lets the sea extend very far to the right. Small walkers, placed near the center, give the scale of the foreshore.

The sky combines purple, cream and blue gray; its yellow gaps are reflected in long bands on the water. The cliff mixes white chalk, dark green and brown. The figures remain simple vertical accents in the middle of the horizontal touches.

In W778, low tide is not a void: it becomes a surface of light where the sky, rocks and walkers find their distance.

An exceptionally large format

The proportions of 60 × 100 cm stretch the shore and give the sea a calm presence. The cliff remains concentrated on the left instead of dominating the entire composition.

Walkers are tiny and spaced apart. They allow you to understand the extent discovered by the tide without transforming the landscape into a beach scene.

Bright horizontals

Yellow, purple and gray lines follow the surface of the water. Their discontinuity produces a sparkle and maintains the mobility of the sea despite its calm.

Respect the open space on the right

The sea and the sky must maintain a great width. Refocusing the cliff or cropping the canvas would cause W778 to lose the panoramic breath.

Maintain yellow reflections in bands

Light is not a uniform spot. It fragments horizontally between purple and gray passages, which gives movement to the water.

Matter03

Keep the figures very small

Their presence must remain secondary but readable. Too detailed silhouettes would break the unity of the keys and distort the scale of the site.

Campaign01

Two stays in Pourville in 1882

Monet worked on the Normandy coast from February to April, then from June to October. These stays allow him to compare cliffs, tides and seasonal lights.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel acquired the painting in October 1882

The dealer bought the work directly from Monet, then sold it to Paul Gallimard in 1899. It then passed through several collections and the Paul Rosenberg gallery.

The large format of 60 × 100 cm, the point on the left and walkers on the foreshore distinguish this view from the other low tides painted around Pourville.
