Pointe du Cap Martin W893hand painted reproduction

At Cape Martin, Monet chooses neither a social walk nor a peaceful bay. It faces a shore of black rocks where the foam breaks, under curved pines which close the entire right side. A tiny sail appears in the distance in the milky light. The Tournai museum describes a nature captured in its instability: waves, wind and foliage are painted with a touch that borders on abstraction. This oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81 cm, executed in 1884, corresponds to Wildenstein 893.

Look at the work

A rocky coastline absorbs almost the entire foreground while wind and foam transform shapes into colorful gestures

The sea arrives from the left edge, green near the shore and blue on the horizon. Long oblique waves split into whites and turquoise against the rocks. The small sailboat, placed very low and very far, gives the scale of the cape without interrupting the feeling of marine space.

On the right, the red-brown ground rises quickly towards a clump of trees. Their inclined trunks and folded branches reflect the wind as much as their silhouette. Monet juxtaposes browns, blues, greens, yellows and oranges on the stones; the coast ceases to be a compact mass and becomes a network of touches crossed by foam.

The Tournai Museum of Fine Arts sees in this gestural spontaneity, close to abstraction, a way of introducing time: the image does not only describe a place, but the successive transformations of the sea, the air and trees.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The diagonal of the shore puts the scene under tension

The coast starts from the bottom almost in the center and goes up to the right. It contrasts the density of the rocks with the vast pale sky and forces the eye to follow the shock of the waves.

02

The wind is read in the direction of the sideline

Trunks, branches, sea spray and waves share rapid inclinations. The elements remain distinct, but their common gesture gives the entire canvas the same meteorological condition.

03

The blacks of the rocks are constructed by color

Deep blues, browns, purples and red accents form the dark areas. The foam whites insert together and prevent the foreground from becoming an opaque mass.

Read this specific version

The single image exactly reproduces Wildenstein 893. The official Tournai museum file measures 1,024 × 817 px; it remains at its native definition, without artificial enlargement, then is encoded in real WebP.

Composition01

Preserve the very small veil of the horizon

It appears secondary, but provides the only human measure of distance. Enlarged or too contrasting, it would distract attention from the course and the waves.

Color02

Respect the growth of trees towards the sea

The trunks are not vertical. Their inclination and the direction of the foliage must reflect the gust without transforming the pines into rigid graphic silhouettes.

Matter03

Keep scum fragmented

The whites do not form a continuous outline around the rocks. They appear in bursts, mixed with greens and blues, so that the sea retains its movement.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Tournai Museum of Fine Arts documents La Pointe du Cap Martin, oil on canvas from 1884, 65 × 81 cm, listed Wildenstein 893.

Travel01

Monet's second stay on the Riviera

After a first trip with Renoir in 1883, Monet returned alone to the South in January 1884. His stay planned for a month ultimately lasted around three months, the time to face a very different light and vegetation of the Seine valley.

Pattern02

A shore near Menton subject to the wind

Cape Martin is observed from a low point, in contact with rocks. The museum emphasizes the foam, the quivering of the trees and the painter's sensitivity to the physical conditions of the place.

Modernity03

A gestural touch bordering on abstraction

Rocks, leaves and waves are not enclosed by the drawing. Their directions and colors record successive states, which gives the painting a particularly modern mobility for 1884.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 893 version from the Tournai museum
  • The tiny sail placed on the horizon
  • The rocky diagonal that rises towards the pines
  • Shards of foam mixed with Mediterranean greens
