Orchard in bloom with a view of Arles, F516Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Between two poplar trunks, the white orchards of Arles open onto a blue town whose bell towers emerge in the distance.
Look at the work
Arles spring seen from the orchards
Van Gogh sets up his viewpoint in the countryside northeast of Arles. Two pruned trees frame the scene like uprights, while a ditch and a strip of land lead the eye towards the flowering fruit trees. A small leaning figure works in the middle of this vegetation.
Beyond the orchards, the silhouette of Arles is reduced to a few blue and pink masses. The towers of Saint-Trophime and Notre-Dame-la-Major serve as landmarks, but the artist mainly favors the rhythm of the branches, the white touches of the flowers and the succession of colorful shots.
The city remains distant: the real subject is the passage from the first brown and green plan towards the almost snowy glow of the flowering orchards.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The composition combines a solid framing, given by the poplars, with a very mobile touch which circulates the light between the branches.
Two trees as a frame
The trunks cut by the upper edge delimit a vertical window within the horizontal format and give depth to the panorama.
A luminous flowering
Whites are never uniform: they mix with pink, blue and light green to make the crowns of fruit trees vibrate.
Arles on the horizon
Buildings are simplified into small touches. Their reduced scale reinforces the extent of the orchards and the feeling of spring air.
