Charing Cross Bridge, pink reflectionshand painted reproduction

The Charing Cross Bridge floats in pink, peach and sea green light. Under the purple piers, the Thames is covered with warm reflections; boats and their smoke form small dark masses that the mist absorbs almost immediately.

Look at the work

Pink reflections bring the Thames closer together while the bridge remains in the mist

The bridge is placed high in the table and leaves plenty of room for the river. Its purple piers descend vertically, then fragment into pink, yellow and turquoise touches. On the right, Parliament remains a barely perceptible blue presence.

The boats in the foreground are not described by their contours. Hulls, chimneys and smoke are some brown and purple densities among the reflections. Their position is enough to give scale and movement to the scene.

This version can be recognized by its unusual balance: a very warm pink atmosphere, without losing the cold greens which give the Thames its depth.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Charing Cross Bridge, pink reflections - Claude Monet
01

A bridge pushed up the format

The large water area amplifies reflections and brings boats together. Respecting this distribution is essential to maintain the depth of the composition.

02

Warm colors interrupted by sea green

Roses and peaches never form a uniform layer. Turquoise, green gray and mauve circulate between them and maintain the luminous vibration.

03

Boats built in fragments

A few touches of purple-brown evoke hulls and fireplaces. To surround them or add narrative details would artificially detach them from the atmosphere.

Details and visual documents

Observe the material and the exact version

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These benchmarks concern precisely the Wildenstein 1550 version and come from the sales notice which documents its identity, its format and its origin.

Identification01

The Wildenstein 1550 version

This oil on canvas of approximately 65 × 80 cm was painted between 1899 and 1901. The version belongs to a private collection and is referenced under the number Wildenstein 1550.

Provenance02

From the Monet family to private collections

The work passed around 1921 to Monet's grandson, James Butler, then through Alex Maguy's Galerie de l'Élysée. Its later provenance is documented by several New York sales.

Viewpoint03

Charing Cross Bridge from the Savoy Hotel

Monet observes the bridge from his room and the Savoy terrace. The paintings started in front of the Thames are then taken up in Giverny to match the variations in light of the series.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact Wildenstein 1550 version
  • The particular ratio of the 65 × 80 cm format
  • Warm roses balanced by sea green
  • The boats preserved diffuse in the reflections
