The railway bridge cuts the horizon with a regular line, but Monet looks at it from a bank where the grass almost rises to the wagons. The black locomotive and its smoke advance from left to right, while the arches follow one another towards the distance. The work transforms an engineering work into an atmospheric event: metal, masonry, steam and foliage share the same colored grays.
Look at the work
The convoy forms a series of small brown and black masses under a gray beige sky. Its locomotive is located near the left quarter; thick smoke rises then stretches horizontally. The bridge extends well beyond the center and its deck remains visible up to the right edge.
The construction dominates the distance, but the immediate vicinity is made of plants. White and green tufts accumulate on the left; a path or area of lighter earth curves towards the arch; on the right, greener foliage rises in front of the piles and fragments their geometry.
The train passes in the distance, but the grass material is so close that the viewer simultaneously perceives the extent of the bridge and the thickness of the terrain.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The first plant plane is the largest, the bridge forms a narrow strip in the center and the sky closes the upper part. This relationship prevents architecture from becoming the only subject and maintains immersion in nature.
The apron supports repeat at decreasing intervals. Their color gradually approaches that of the sky, so that the structure appears both solid near the center and dissolved in the distance.
Grasses receive short, directional strokes; the smoke is more melted; the bridge combines horizontals and verticals. Colorful coherence unites these writings without erasing their functions.

The visual reproduces work 7743 of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, classified Wildenstein 367. The native image of 2,200 × 1,311 px was encoded in high quality WebP without oversampling.
Its wagons are identifiable without accumulation of details. Reinforcing them excessively would bring them closer to the foreground and destroy the distance obtained by the grass.
Between two masses of vegetation, a pale shape rises towards the arch. Its curve offers a flexible transition between the nearby touches and the geometry of the bridge.
Bluish greens, ochres, grays and browns are not distributed in isolated areas. Their alternation gives overcast weather a luminous vibration that reproduction must preserve.
Documented benchmarks
Made in 1875, this canvas measures 60 × 100 cm. It bears inventory 7743 at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires and number 367 in the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.
Monet knew the line which served the communes of the Seine well. Here, the locomotive is neither celebrated nor opposed to nature: it simply passes through the atmosphere and becomes a series of colors.
The shape of the deck and supports corresponds to the Chatou railway bridge. The historical title of the museum mentions Argenteuil, while the identification W367 specifies the location retained today by studies on Monet.
The Argentine collector brought together large European paintings before transmitting them to the museum in 1970. This provenance explains the presence in Buenos Aires of an important landscape from the Argenteuil period.
