À propos de l’œuvre

Le pont de Waterloo, l'effet de la lumière du soleil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1903 · Art Institute of Chicago · Wildenstein 1586

Waterloo Bridge, sun effecthand painted reproduction

Waterloo Bridge passes through an almost continuous lilac mist. The blue-purple arches barely emerge; on the apron, a few touches of orange, red and white concentrate the light, while the chimneys become simple transparent verticals.

Look at the work

A few warm accents are enough to make the sun appear

The bridge cuts the canvas slightly below the center. Its piers and arches are reduced to blue-purple shapes very close to the sky and water. The industrial bank is indicated only by several vertical chimneys and a darker central mass, all absorbed by pale pink and lavender layers.

Light is not represented by a visible sun. It focuses on the apron, where a discontinuous series of yellow, orange, red and white evokes vehicles. In the Thames, large blue and purple passages take up the mist of the sky, with denser material around the arches.

The scene appears almost monochrome until the warm little touches of the bridge reveal the direction of the light and transform all the purple mist.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Waterloo Bridge, sun effect - Claude Monet
01

A bridge without a solid line

Apron, piers and arches are built by very small deviations in value. Hardening them in reproduction would destroy the impression that architecture is formed inside the atmosphere.

02

The brightest colors reserved for traffic

The Art Institute highlights the orange, red and white accents placed on the deck. Their small scale is essential: they must shine without becoming detailed objects.

03

A surface made of successive layers

The museum's technical study observes thick painting, often carried by covered front touches. The uniform relief of the sky and water preserves the memory of several work sessions.

Details and visual documents

The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

Arches and colorful circulationThe cropping reveals the deep blue piles and shiny touches placed on the apron. Yellow, orange, red and white form a broken line brighter than the rest of the canvas.

Chimneys in the lilac mistAbove the bridge, the industrial verticals are almost transparent. Pink, light blue and purple pass in front of their contours and keep them at bay.

The main view measures 2200 × 1423 px. Details of 1500 × 760 px and 1350 × 820 px are direct cropping of this Art Institute version. No artificial enlargement has been applied; all three files are in WebP.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Inventory 1933.1163, Wildenstein 1586

This oil on canvas of 65.7 × 101 cm is signed and dated in blue lower right "Claude Monet 1903". It belongs to the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Martin A. Ryerson.

Support02

A linen canvas in navy format n° 40

The Art Institute's analysis identifies a pre-coated linen canvas in standard marine format n°40, purchased in London from the French supplier Lechertier Barbe.

Elaboration03

Started in London, harmonized in Giverny

The painting was probably started in 1900 from the Savoy Hotel, then taken up with the other views of the Thames in Giverny's studio. Monet dates the work when he considered it completed in 1903.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The readable arches without too hard blue outline
  • The little orange, red and white accents on the apron
  • Atmospheric continuity between sky and water
  • The low, even material that retains the underlying touches

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The dominant lilac and mist blue, awakened by a few warm notes, is suitable for off-white, pearl gray, powder pink or smoked blue walls. The horizontal format works particularly above a sofa or sideboard.
