Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1891 · private collection · W1299
Under an overcast sky tinged with pink and gray, a row of poplars crosses the canvas through its thin trunks and blue-green foliage. The Epte only occupies a low band, sufficient to take on the colors of the sky. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 91", this version is Wildenstein 1299.

Look at the work
Poplars are not shown from their base to their crown in a regular view. The crowns meet at the top, the trunks shift and the young shoots create a second vertical rhythm in the foreground.
The pinkish mauve sky passes between the trees and lightens the mass of the foliage. Monet uses cool greens, blue-gray and a few touches of red on the trunks. The covered atmosphere unifies these colors without making them dull.
W1299 transforms a row of trees into a network of verticals: light circulates as much in the voids of the sky as in the foliage.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Sotheby's documents an oil on canvas measuring 91.5 × 81.5 cm, signed and dated "Claude Monet 91" lower right. The work is now in private collection.
Monet discovered this row on the bank of the Epte near Giverny and worked from his workshop boat. When the trees risk being felled, he helps delay their sale in order to continue the series.
Passed in particular by Durand-Ruel and the Potter Palmer family, the painting has appeared in several major exhibitions devoted to Monet's series. It was sold in New York in November 2023.

Only one image is used: the exact view of W1299 published for the Sotheby's sale, preserved as a real WebP of 1,908 × 2,200 px without artificial enlargement.
The central trunks are thin and almost bare; the lateral masses are denser. Reproduction must maintain this asymmetry rather than aligning trees mechanically.
Overcast skies are not neutral gray. Its cold pinks and purples respond to the greens of the foliage and give the whole a diffused light.
The foliage is made up of discontinuous marks between which the bottom remains visible. The impasto must keep these openings to avoid an opaque mass.
Documented benchmarks
The Sotheby's notice sets the identification of this canvas: 1891, 91.5 × 81.5 cm, signature and date at the bottom right, Wildenstein catalog 1299.
The almost square format and the vast pink-gray sky distinguish this composition from the narrower vertical Poplars and versions centered on reflections.
The ancient provenance connects the painting to the merchant who organized the Poplars exhibition in 1892 and to one of the great centers of American impressionist collecting.
The painting was sold in New York in November 2023. The sheet therefore indicates its current private situation and not permanent conservation in a museum.

Presentation in your interior
Its bluish greens and pinkish mauve sky create a calm atmosphere in a living room, bedroom or office. Light wood, pearl gray and sage green textiles extend this light without weakening the trunks.
