The erect trunks share the panorama in intervals of light
The poplars in the foreground form an irregular colonnade. Between them appear the bell tower, roofs, a strip of sky and several tiny figures advancing along the path.
The ground is constructed by short touches that alternate ocher, gray and green. In the sky and foliage, blue and light accents added later illuminate an initially darker base.
Poplars near Nuenen F45/JH959 is an oil on canvas of 78 × 98 cm painted in 1885 then taken up in Paris in 1886. The Boijmans museum preserves it under inventory 1239 (MK).
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work combines the dark structure of a Dutch landscape with brighter colorful covers. Vertical lines dominate, but paths, branches and touches of the ground prevent any rigidity.
The trunks organize the entire width
Their spacing creates a series of openings that reveal the village. The bell tower is only visible between two barrels, which integrates it into the rhythm rather than the center.
Figures give scale
Two women and other figures are tiny facing the trees. They make you feel the depth of the path and the height of the poplars.
The Parisian covers light up the surface
Sky blues and light touches in the trees contrast with the brown substructure. The painting thus records the evolution of Van Gogh's palette.
