Look at the work

Two autumn flames in the middle of the hills

The two poplars occupy the axis of the canvas: the largest rises almost to the upper edge, the second leans slightly to the right. A house appears between their trunks, while a white path, walls and crops organize the bottom of the composition.

Van Gogh contrasts the warm leaves with the blues of the sky, mountains and shadows. The dark contours unite trees, walls and reliefs; the clouds are painted in long light commas which take the direction of the slopes.

The landscape is not only based on the blue-orange contrast: it is built like a succession of ascending lines which lead from the road to the poplars then to the sky.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Painted after returning to outdoor work, the canvas shows how Van Gogh transforms a real autumnal pattern through the intensity of color and rhythm.

01

An asymmetrical duo

The two trees are close but different in size and inclination. This variation avoids symmetry and gives the center an upward movement.

02

Orange on blue

The orange-yellow foliage stands out against a saturated sky; green and brown touches nevertheless maintain the volume of the crowns.

03

A zigzag road

The walls and the clear path cut the foreground into successive angles, giving access to the small building then to the hills.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Inventory 1958.32 and references F638/JH1797 designate the Cleveland canvas, painted in Saint-Rémy in October 1889.

Season

Provençal autumn

The yellow and orange foliage show the change of season, a subject that Van Gogh seeks in his outings around Saint-Rémy.

Outdoors

An observed landscape

The Cleveland Museum points out that Van Gogh then resumed work outside, with nature painting playing an essential role in his stay in St. Paul.

Collection

Legacy Hanna

Leonard C. Hanna Jr. bequeathed the painting to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is numbered 1958.32.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must preserve the contrast of warm poplars against the blue sky, the nervous contours and the breathing of clear paths without making the landscape decoratively smooth.

  • The left poplar higher and almost vertical
  • The second tree slightly inclined
  • The small house visible between the trunks
  • The clear path and the zigzag walls
  • The long white touches in the blue sky
