The Poplars, three pink trees, autumn W1307hand painted reproduction

Three pink and golden poplars rise out of the frame in front of a curve of autumn trees. The Epte reflects the blue of the sky and the foliage in discontinuous touches. This 92 × 73 cm vertical oil on canvas is kept at the Philadelphia Museum of Art under number 52186.

Look at the work

Three vertical trunks in front of an autumn curve

Nearby poplars divide the sky into large, irregular intervals. Their top is cut by the frame, which increases their height. Behind them, a lower row describes an arc then folds to the right, drawing the eye into depth.

Salmon pink, golden yellow and soft green warm the trunks against a purple-blue sky. The water takes on these tones with less clarity: the reflections break into small vertical touches, while the dark bank forms an oblique band between the landscape and its double.

W1307 unites two rhythms: the three trunks rise like columns, while the distant row and its reflections lead the gaze in curves.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The Wildenstein 1307 version

The vertical format, the three large trunks and the pink autumn light identify the canvas of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It corresponds to number 1307 of the catalog raisonné.

02

Work carried out from a boat

In 1891, Monet traveled to the Epte in a small boat to choose his groups of trees and quickly follow the changes in light. He works on several canvases at once.

03

Trees preserved while painting

When the poplars need to be felled, Monet participates in their purchase with a lumber merchant so that they remain in place until the series is completed.

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the exact view of W1307, converted to a real WebP of 1967 × 2459 px at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Three verticals that go out of the frame

Trunks should not be shortened to bring in the tops. Their interruption by the upper edge is essential to the impression of height.

Color02

A pink rather than orange autumn

The foliage mixes pink, mauve, yellow and green. Reproduction that is too orange would lose the blue freshness that envelops the trees and water.

Matter03

Reflections without mechanical symmetry

The surface of the Epte shifts colors and fragments them. The duplicates of the trunks remain perceptible, but they must never become continuous or identical lines.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Philadelphia Museum of Art preserves this oil on canvas from 1891, 92 × 73 cm, under number 52186; it is listed as Wildenstein 1307.

Collection01

Philadelphia Museum of Art, 52186

The museum notice retains the title Poplars, Three Trees in Autumn, translated into French as Les Peupliers, trois Arbres Roses, Autumn.

Series02

The Poplars of Epte, 1891

Monet varies the number of trees, distance, time and season in order to transform the same row into autonomous compositions.

Presentation03

Series exhibited at Durand-Ruel in February 1892

Around fifteen Poplars gathered in Paris, allowing the public to compare changes in color and structure from one canvas to another.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical composition is suitable for a narrow section of wall, an entrance or a space between two windows. Blonde oak, sage green, powder pink and gray blue extend its light without competing with trunks.
