Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1891 · private collection · W1296
A row of poplars is cut into dark arabesques in front of a pink and purple sky. Their reflections lengthen the trunks in the Epte to the lower edge of the canvas. Signed and dated "Claude Monet 91", this version of 100 × 65.1 cm is Wildenstein 1296.

Look at the work
The poplars are aligned on the bank, but their curves and gaps avoid any rigidity. The trunks cross almost the entire height; their reflections extend the rhythm downwards and give the water as much importance as the sky.
Twilight colors the background pink, lilac and blue. The foliage remains dark, punctuated with greens and reds. This opposition transforms the row of trees into a decorative silhouette without removing the vibrations of air and water.
W1296 makes poplars a single continuous shape: trees, sky and reflections follow one another vertically without a dominant horizon line.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Christie's documents an oil on canvas measuring 100 × 65.1 cm, signed and dated "Claude Monet 91" lower right. The work belongs to the Poplars series painted along the Epte.
This painting was selected in first position among the fifteen Poplars exhibited at the Durand-Ruel gallery, from February 29 to March 10, 1892, highlighting its role in reading the series.
After a long loan to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the painting was sold at Christie's in New York on May 12, 2025. It should therefore not be presented as belonging to the museum.

Only one image is used: the exact view of W1296 published by Christie's, preserved as a real WebP of 1,287 × 2,000 px without artificial enlargement.
Trunks vary in width, inclination and spacing. Their reflections deform in water and should not be copied as exact symmetry.
The bright sky must remain soft in the face of green and purple masses. The reds scattered in the foliage connect the trees to the evening atmosphere.
The sky receives soft passages, the trees receive tighter marks and the water receive broken vertical lines. These three writings build depth.
Documented benchmarks
The Christie's notice precisely identifies Wildenstein 1296: an oil on canvas from 1891 measuring 100 × 65.1 cm, today in private collection.
The canvas bears the signature and date "Claude Monet 91" at the bottom right. Its vertical format accentuates the continuity between the trees and their reflections.
Monet brings together fifteen Poplars in a personal exhibition. W1296 opens the selection and immediately installs the serial principle: a constant pattern under changing lights.
The work was sold at Christie's in New York on May 12, 2025 after having been loaned to MFA Boston for a long time. The old museum location is no longer current.

Presentation in your interior
The verticality of the trees is suitable for a narrow wall, an entrance or the space between two windows. Gray pink, plum, deep green and dark wood compose an enveloping harmony, particularly beautiful with soft side lighting.
