Reproduction details

Claude Monet · 1886 · wild coast of Belle-Île-en-Mer

Rocks in Port-Coton, the Lion Rockhand painted reproduction

A dark cliff, a rock erect like an animal and a sea that breaks in dozens of directions: Monet seeks less a panorama than a natural force in action.

Look at the work

Lion Rock resists in the center of a restless sea

The cliff closes to the left while Lion Rock stands out in the center, surrounded by foam. The gaze only reaches the horizon after crossing a very dense network of waves, rocks and emerald green passages.

The low sky occupies a relatively narrow strip. All the energy is concentrated in the water: white, blue, green and gray touches change direction around each obstacle and make the violence of the surf perceptible.

Monet does not paint a generic wave: each rock modifies the current, the foam and the rhythm of the brush.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of Rocks in Port-Coton, the Lion Rock - Claude Monet
01

Two masses to hold the composition

The large cliff on the left and Lion Rock in the center stabilize an extremely mobile maritime surface. The dark shapes serve as a counterweight to the foam.

02

Scum in cross-touches

Whites, bluish grays and greens are placed in commas and short lines. Their orientation describes the impact of waves against reefs.

03

A coast without anecdote

No boat or character gives scale. This absence makes the site more monumental and lets light, rock and wind become the only actors.

In the fall and winter of 1886, Monet planned a brief visit to Belle-Île but stayed ten weeks in a hamlet located about five hundred meters from the wild coast.

Together02

Thirty-nine paintings

The Fitzwilliam Museum indicates that this painting belongs to the thirty-nine paintings executed during this Breton stay.

Provenance03

Purchased from Monet in 1887

Boussod, Valadon & Cie purchased the painting directly from Monet in April 1887. It was attributed to the Fitzwilliam Museum by the British government in 1998.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The contrast between the purple-brown rocks and the green sea
  • Multiple directions of foam
  • The immediately readable silhouette of Lion Rock
  • Colorful gray sky without flattening it

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Marine greens and dark earths give a lot of energy to a light wall. The horizontal format works particularly well above a sofa, a sideboard or in a room facing mineral materials.
