A sea enclosed in the rocky gorge of Port-Goulphar

Two cliffs cut by the lower edges frame a narrow channel. At the bottom, massive rocks occupy the entire upper register and remove the horizon line. A clear opening between the masses only suggests the continuity of the sea.

The water is made of hundreds of touches of turquoise, blue, emerald green and white. The rocks bring together purple, brown, pink and green, with illuminated edges that change their volume. The purple and gray sky remains compact, almost as material as stone.

Deprived of a horizon, the navy becomes a surface under tension: the gaze is caught between the cliffs and must follow the shards of the water to find a way out.

The central channel appears small, but Monet fills it with a multitude of touches indicating waves, foam and reflections. The water thus concentrates the most intense movement of the canvas.

A close construction of Japanese prints

The cut framing, the superposition of the shots and the absence of horizon join visual solutions present in the Japanese prints that Monet knew and collected.

They indicate foam and wave breaks. Their dispersion must remain irregular so that the surface appears agitated, never decorative.

The museum notice recalls the presence of expatriate painter John Russell in Belle-Île. This link gives particular resonance to the conservation of W1094 in an Australian public collection.

Purchased by the Art Gallery in 1949

After belonging to the Durand-Ruel family then to several dealers and collectors, the work was acquired from the Rousso Gallery and entered Sydney under number 8356.
