Port of Dieppe, evening W706hand painted reproduction

The Dieppe port basin reflects the last yellow and pink glimmers of the evening, while the city and the bell tower of Saint-Jacques are silhouetted in dark blue. Painted in February 1882, this 58.4 × 72.1 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and corresponds to Wildenstein 706.

Look at the work

The sunset descends from the sky into the still water of the port

The dark quays frame the pool and direct the gaze towards the silhouette of Dieppe. A few boats and vertical masts punctuate the central area without interrupting the great horizontal movement of reflections.

Yellow, pink and light green cross the sky then repeat in cold water. Between these two luminous surfaces, the city forms a compact blue band where the bell tower of Saint-Jacques remains the main landmark.

The port is not described by the activity of its quays, but by the exchange of colors between the winter sky, the darkened city and the mirror of the basin.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The city reduced to a silhouette

The buildings are deliberately not very detailed. Their dark mass separates two lighter areas and gives the bell tower its readability without precise architectural drawing.

02

Brief verticals in a horizontal landscape

Masts, chimneys and reflections rise in the center, but remain secondary to the long touches of sky and water. This balance maintains the serenity of the evening.

03

A port painted in the middle of winter

Monet stayed in Dieppe in February 1882. The low light, humid atmosphere and almost still pool produced a cooler palette than his summer views of the coast.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W706 is used. The real WebP measures 354 × 283 px, the best reliable public definition identified for this version, preserved without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the urban strip dark blue

It must remain dense without turning black. Its variations allow you to recognize the bell tower, roofs and quays in the darkness.

Color02

Preserve the yellow-green from reflections

These accents give the pool its inner light. They should blend with blues and pinks rather than forming a uniform band.

Matter03

Keeping boats in sign state

A few vertical touches and their reflections are enough. Too precise a drawing would distract the eye from the general atmosphere of the port.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Dixon Gallery and Gardens documents Port de Dieppe, in the evening, oil on canvas from 1882, 58.4 × 72.1 cm, donated by Montgomery HW Ritchie and listed as Wildenstein 706.

Location01

The old port of Dieppe seen towards the Saint-Jacques church

The central bell tower and the profile of the quays make it possible to identify the orientation of the gaze across the pool.

Collection02

Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis

The work joined the museum thanks to a donation from Montgomery HW Ritchie, an important supporter of the institution's French collection.

Moment03

An evening effect in February 1882

Low sun is not directly represented; its light remains in the clouds, yellow gaps and reflections stretched over the water.
