Look at the work

A small portrait where the face faces a red earth background

The wide border of the hat cuts the top of the face and casts a shadow over the eyes. The high collar, the round medallion and the vertical line of the garment organize the lower part.

Van Gogh contrasts the pinkish paleness of the skin with the dark brown of the dress. The background, placed in visible diagonals, remains deliberately simple to preserve the full presence of the model.

Portrait of a woman in a hat F215c is a 27.3 × 19.1 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in the spring of 1886. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0091V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This portrait of the first Parisian months retains a muted range, but the touch of the background, the colored shadows and the tight framing announce a freer search on the figure.

01

Hat occupies almost a third of the height

Its ornate cap extends the silhouette upwards, while the wide oblique edge frames the eyes and gives the model a very contemporary look.

02

The face is constructed by hot and cold values

Pink cheeks, gray green shadows, cream of the neck and red lips avoid a monochrome pattern despite the overall dark palette.

03

The medallion stabilizes the composition

This small brown circle placed under the collar responds to the face and interrupts the long, almost black verticals of the dress.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The inventory s0091V1962, the number F215c and the format of 27.3 × 19.1 cm precisely identify this small portrait without JH number.

Paris

A work from the first months

Van Gogh painted this woman shortly after her arrival in Paris, before her palette became much clearer upon contact with the Impressionists.

Model

An identity that remains unknown

The institutional title does not name the woman. His decorated hat, earring and medallion are the main clues to his presentation.

Catalog

F215c, without JH number

The letter added to number F distinguishes this painting from other portraits and figure studies taken in Paris during the same period.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the shadow of the hat, the asymmetry of the gaze, the pinks and greens of the face, the circular medallion, the almost black dress and the brown diagonals of the background.

  • The discreet ornaments of the high cap
  • The edge of the hat above the eyes
  • The green-gray touches around the eyes
  • The round medallion under the white collar
  • The wide diagonals of the red-brown background
