Claude-Adolphe Monet appears in profile, his face turned to the left, in front of an almost plain red-brown background. The rimmed glasses, the open forehead and the gray beard give the model an immediately recognizable presence. Claude Monet created this tight portrait of his father in 1865, well before the impressionist landscapes that made him famous.
Look at the work
The bust is cut under the shoulders and placed slightly to the right. The black suit blends into the dark part of the background, while the white bib and the black bow form a very clear point of support. This economy directs all attention to the head, lit on the forehead, cheek and bridge of the nose.
Monet does not smooth the face. Browns, ochres, pinks and some gray accents shape the skin in small visible areas. The glasses, mustache and beard are placed with more graphic features; the red-brown background, animated by discreet variations, brings out the hair and the collar.
Before dissolving the shapes in the light of the landscapes, Monet shows here that he knows how to fix a physiognomy with a concise composition and already very free material.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The model does not seek the viewer's gaze. His eye, amplified by the round glass, follows a lateral direction which accentuates the nose, forehead and beard. The pose gives the portrait a calm gravity rather than a worldly character.
The red brown of the background, the deep black of the garment and the white of the breastplate constitute the main architecture. Warm facial tones fit between these masses and prevent the silhouette from getting lost in the shadows.
The hairs are not described one by one. Bluish gray, brown, off-white and black overlap in small irregular touches. This living material distinguishes the beard from the firmer outline of the glasses and jacket.

Warm and cold grays crisscross around the chin. The touches should remain distinct, especially near the cheek, without transforming the hair into a compact white mass.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1865, this oil portrait on canvas measures 53 × 45 cm. It is kept at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, under inventory 210, and bears number 53 of the Wildenstein catalog.
Born in 1800, Claude-Adolphe Monet was a merchant and lived in Le Havre, where his son grew up. The choice of a profile pose and a very close framing gives this family study a sobriety far removed from the ceremonial portrait.
The year 1865 marked his first notable participations in the Salon with two views of the Seine estuary. This portrait reveals, at the same time, a practice of the figure often eclipsed by the story of his beginnings as a landscaper.
Several portraits of Monet's father exist in catalogs and collections. The dimensions of 53 × 45 cm, the profile turned left and the conservation at Rutgers precisely identify the canvas presented here.
