A slightly unhinged face
Jean doesn't look quite straight ahead. This subtle orientation animates the eyes and avoids the rigidity of an official portrait.

Claude Monet · Jean Monet · 1880 · W632
Jean Monet, eldest son of the painter, appears mid-bust in a blue-black garment bordered by a large white collar. His still adolescent face turns slightly to the right, with an attentive look and a restrained expression. Signed and dated lower right in 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 47 × 38 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5021 and corresponds to Wildenstein 632.

Look at the work
The head is placed in the upper third and the bust cut close to the shoulders. The large light collar forms an almost triangular base under the face, while the dark hair creates a rounded mass against the gray-purple background.
The skin tones combine pink, ocher, green and blue in very visible touches. The garment remains more compact, with colored blacks and deep purples. The background is brushed freely, without object or indication of space.
The resemblance arises less from a careful outline than from small temperature variations around the eyes, nose and mouth.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Jean doesn't look quite straight ahead. This subtle orientation animates the eyes and avoids the rigidity of an official portrait.
Its wide shape separates the skin tones from the dark garment and focuses attention on the head without decorative accessories.
Purple, gray and blue touches surround the model without building an interior. They keep the speed of the painting visible.
Reference image
The unique collector's image from the Marmottan Monet museum is preserved in its native definition of 1,500 × 1,791 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
The direction of the pupils and the slight rotation of the head give the portrait its calm presence and must remain precise.
They shape the shadows around the eyes and cheeks; replacing them with uniform browns would weigh down the skin tones.
This colorful inscription is part of the dark bust balance and identifies the precise condition of the canvas.
Documented benchmarks
The Marmottan Monet museum documents Portrait of Jean Monet, oil on canvas from 1880, 47 × 38 cm, signed and dated lower right, inventory 5021 and Wildenstein catalog 632.
Born in 1867, Jean was around thirteen years old when his father created this tight portrait, centered on the face and the large light collar.
The museum notes at the bottom right the Claude Monet inscription followed by 1880, painted red on the dark garment.
Remaining in the family, the work enters the Marmottan museum with the legacy of the artist's second son and bears inventory 5021.
