Look at the work

A portrait of Antwerp painted in a single session

The bust occupies almost the entire vertical format. The line of the hat goes down towards the left eye, then the light collar and the coat form two diagonals which keep the face in the center.

The flesh is made of pink, cream, ocher and gray green. A little light touch to the ear creates a precious accent, while the dark background absorbs the contours of the clothes.

Portrait of a Woman F207a/JH1204 is a 46.3 × 38.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Antwerp in December 1885. The work is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0143V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh works quickly and leaves the construction visible. The thick touches do not seek to smooth the skin; they organize the light of the face and bring out the model of the green-brown background.

The look holds the entire portrait

The eyes are surrounded by blue-gray and brown features. Their slight asymmetry avoids frozen pose and gives the woman an attentive, almost suspicious presence.

The hat closes the upper part

Its large black mass creates an arc above the forehead. It responds to the dark coat and frames the lighter tones of the face like two parentheses.

The earring is a touch of material

A pinkish-white impasto marks the jewel on the right. The museum says some of that thickness has come off, leaving visible the physical importance of the original accent.
