The parasol transforms a walk into an outdoor portrait

Jacquemont is shown from the front, slightly off-center to the right. His left hand holds the handle of the parasol and the other appears to grab a small object. The large black shape behind the head creates an immediate background that isolates the face from greenery.

The ocher path narrows upwards and disappears under the trees. The dog, cut very close to the right edge, animates the step and counterbalances the body. The hedges and foliage form a deep green setting, opened only by a few spots of light.

The parasol provides the face with its dark background; the path and the dog transform the effigy into a lived moment.

The jacket and vest combine ochres, browns and reddish reflections. The bluish gray pants refresh the center of the silhouette and link the clothes to the greens of the landscape.

The dog extends the movement of the model

Its black and white spots reflect the contrasts of the parasol, the collar and the shoes. Its slightly forward position suggests walking.

Model01

Victor Jacquemont, childhood friend of Monet

The Kunsthaus indicates that his name and address appear in Monet's oldest known address book. The artist confirmed the identity of the model in a letter addressed to Bernheim-Jeune on January 23, 1907.

Title02

The Man with the Umbrella and Portrait by Victor Jacquemont

The notice retains several historical names. The portrait reads both as the effigy of a loved one and as a walking scene where the parasol, the path and the dog are essential.

Collection03

Inventory 2334 of the Kunsthaus Zürich

The museum recorded the work in 1934 before its acquisition in 1939. The painting is signed Claude Monet at the bottom right and its provenance file is published by the institution.
