A young girl stands in a striped lilac dress, her hands clasped at her waist, while a small dog appears at the lower left edge. The pink path and green foliage open the garden behind her. In 1873, Monet associated the attention of the portrait with a quick touch of the outdoors: the face and costume were precise, but their colors circulated freely in the vegetation.
Look at the work
The figure is almost frontal, slightly offset to the left. Her brown hat, dark hair and black ribbon frame a very light face. The vertical stripes of the bodice and skirt lengthen the silhouette, while the hands together form a small pink center in the middle of the blues and purples.
The small dog, cut by the lower edge, introduces a familiar detail and breaks the pose. On the right, a young tree rises to the full height; behind it, the salmon path describes a curve. The foliage is treated in wide touches which reveal fragments of purple sky.
The pose remains attentive and almost ceremonious, but the dog, the path and the vegetation bring the portrait back to the ordinary moment of a garden.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The silhouette, the stripes of the dress and the trunk on the right respond to each other. Monet balances these lines by the curve of the path and by the flexible mass of the foliage, which prevents the pose from becoming stiff.
The dress combines lilac, blue, white and black accents. The same purples reappear in the sky and shadows of the garden, while green reflections creep onto the costume.
The lines are laid with small brown and pink values, significantly tighter than the back keys. This difference in style maintains the resemblance without artificially detaching the figure.

Yellow greens on the ground, blue greens in the background and very dark greens in the leaves in the foreground structure the space. This variety gives depth around the lilac color.

Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 55.2 × 45.7 cm. It is kept at the Barnes Foundation under inventory BF857 and listed as Wildenstein 283.
The Barnes Foundation presents the work under the title Girl with Dog. The name of Mademoiselle Bonnet remains attached to French literature and Monet's catalog, without the museum file developing the identity of the model.
The model occupies most of the format, but the garden remains fully active. Monet circulates greens, mauves and blues between the dress, the sky and the foliage.
The painting is registered under number BF857. It is part of the impressionist ensemble brought together by Albert C. Barnes and presented according to the characteristic hangings of the foundation.
