Trois rendus pour une même œuvre

Vincent van Gogh · November -December 1888 · Arles

Portrait of Augustine Roulin, F503Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Augustine Roulin sits three-quarters in a red armchair, in front of a yellow wall where a shelf displays baskets and bulbs. The horizontal framing, unusual for a portrait, gives almost as much importance to this familiar interior as to the model.

Look at the work

The portrait unfolds between a silent presence and a domestic still life

Madame Roulin occupies the right half of the canvas. Her olive green dress descends in a large triangular mass, surrounded by a dark outline, while the red back of the armchair follows the curve of her shoulders.

On the left, round baskets, pale onions or bulbs and green tablets construct a second scene. The black verticals of the frame separate this space of objects from the face, but their yellows and greens connect the entire painting.

Portrait of Augustine Roulin is an oil on canvas of 54 × 65 cm painted in Arles in November - December 1888. Referenced F503/JH1646, the work belongs to the Oskar Reinhart "Am Römerholz" collection in Winterthur.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh simplifies volumes, reinforces contours and extends bold colors on an almost landscape format. The figure is therefore not isolated: it visually belongs to the objects and walls of the house.

01

Horizontal format gives the setting the role of a second character

The shelf fills the entire left side and balances the bust. The portrait becomes the story of a domestic environment rather than a simple head detached against a neutral background.

02

Dark contours retain very close colors

Green dress, green shelves, yellow face and yellow wall could merge. Brown and purple lines separate each area while giving the whole a strong graphic unity.

03

The red armchair warms and frames the silhouette

Its backrest forms two curved wings behind the shoulders. This red-brown reserve creates a complementary contrast with the dress and directs attention towards the face.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The references F503/JH1646 and the horizontal format of 54 × 65 cm distinguish this work from the five subsequent large versions of La Berceuse devoted to the same model.

Model

Augustine belongs to the family of postman Joseph Roulin

Van Gogh became friends with Joseph Roulin in Arles and painted his wife and their children Armand, Camille and Marcelle. The family became one of his most followed sets of models.

Letter

Van Gogh announces portraits of the whole family

In letter 723, at the beginning of December 1888, he explains having painted the postman, his wife, the baby and the two boys. The documentary notice identifies in particular this portrait F503/JH1646.

Distinction

This composition is not La Berceuse

Here, Augustine is represented in bust in a horizontal format, without cradle rope. The versions of La Berceuse are larger, vertical and accompanied by floral decoration.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should retain the gently modeled face, the collected hairstyle, the olive green dress, the red armchair, the yellow wall and the baskets of onions or bulbs behind the model.

  • Calm gaze turned slightly to the left
  • The brown lines that outline the hairstyle
  • The big green dress with simplified pleats
  • The red armchair surrounding the shoulders
  • Baskets and bulbs visible on the shelf
