Portrait d'Adeline Ravoux, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Portrait of Adeline RavouxReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Adeline Ravoux, thirteen years old, sits in profile on a yellow chair. Her midnight blue dress stands out against a background covered with large blue and purple hatching, while her face and hands concentrate the only truly warm notes.

Look at the work

A very clear profile in a world of blues

Adeline is shown up to her knees, facing right. Her upper body remains straight, her hands clasped rest on the dress and the yellow back of the chair appears behind her elbow. A gray-blue ribbon holds her blonde hair.

The dress and background use close blue families, but Van Gogh separates them by the direction of the keys: vertical and curved on the garment, horizontal on the wall. The face is drawn by a dark green outline and rapid red accents.

The deliberately restricted range makes the portrait very silent: a few yellows, greens and pinks are enough to bring the model out of the blue space.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This sheet precisely reproduces the F768/JH2035 version of 67 × 55 cm. It differs from F769 by its wider framing, its dark color and the position closer to the hands.

01

Blue on blue

Van Gogh almost merges the dress and the background. The contours, values and especially the orientation of the brush replace the usual color contrast.

02

A profile cut with economy

The nose, mouth and chin fit in a continuous line. A few green, pink and red touches shape the face without seeking an academic finish.

03

The chair as a warm accent

The orange-yellow of the backrest and the blonde of the hair interrupt the cold range. These little warm areas balance the entire dark blue mass of the dress.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The portrait presented here is F768/JH2035, a 67 × 55 cm oil on canvas painted in Auvers in June 1890 and today kept in a private collection in Switzerland.

Model

The daughter of the innkeeper Ravoux

Adeline is the eldest of Arthur-Gustave and Louise Ravoux, who ran the inn where Van Gogh stayed in Auvers. She was thirteen when she posed for him.

Letter

Two portraits mentioned on June 24

In his letter to Theo dated June 24, 1890, Van Gogh mentions the portrait of the innkeeper's daughter and a variation intended for her brother. Publishers identify F768 and F769.

Version

F768, first composition

F768 shows the very dark blue dress and knee-length framing. F769, narrower and higher, simplifies the dress and slightly moves the figure away; a third square version is in Cleveland.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must retain the subtle gaps between dress, background and ribbon, as well as the dark green profile and the warm little notes of the chair.

  • Adeline's precise profile turned to the right
  • The midnight blue dress animated by curved touches
  • The blue purple background placed in horizontal hatching
  • The hair ribbon and the yellow back of the chair

A blue portrait, calm and very graphic

The dominant midnight blue gives depth to an office, bedroom or living room. Ocher yellow notes match honeywood, brass and warm gray walls.
