À propos de l’œuvre

Portrait de l'artiste, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · 1887 · Paris

Self-portrait, F345Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh represents himself in a dark suit, his face turned three-quarters and his gaze directly fixed on the spectator. Around his red head, the deep blue background sparkles with small green, red and orange touches.

Look at the work

Calm face detaches from vibrating surface

The bust fills almost the entire vertical format. The lapel of the coat, the white shirt and the blue tie create a city dweller's silhouette, while the bare face concentrates the brightest reds, pinks, greens and yellows.

The small background marks follow several curves around the head. They do not describe any specific location: their density rather creates a colorful halo which moves the portrait towards the viewer.

Painted in Paris in 1887, this Self-portrait is an oil on artist's cardboard mounted on a 41 × 32.5 cm panel. Referenced F345/JH1249, it belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago under number 1954.326.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Art Institute connects the densely fragmented touch of this portrait to the discovery of Georges Seurat's pointillism. Van Gogh, however, transforms a regular optical method into personal language: the dots become nervous and directional dashes.

01

The bottom is a constellation of complements

Blue and green dominate, but orange and red accents run through them. These oppositions make the dark space surprisingly bright.

02

The eyes interrupt the movement of the key

Their green contours and frontal gaze appear stable among the small marks running through the hair, beard and bottom.

03

The costume is painted as freely as the face

The lapels and the vest are not drawn by continuous lines; they emerge from networks of purple, dark blue, green and red which overlap.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F345/JH1249, the prepared cardboard support and the 1954.326 inventory identify the self-portrait kept in Chicago. It belongs to the vast set of portraits that Van Gogh produced in Paris because he was unable to regularly pay for models.

Context

At least twenty-four self-portraits in Paris

Installed at Theo's house in 1886, Van Gogh used his own face to study the figure, modern colors and new ways of putting the touch.

Influence

A free response to pointillism

In Paris, he saw the research of Seurat and the neo-impressionists. It retains the juxtaposition of pure tones, but retains an irregular and expressive touch.

Collection

Joseph Winterbotham Collection

Joseph Winterbotham acquired the painting before 1935. The work entered the Art Institute in 1954 and has been in issue 1954.326 since.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the very clear green look, the orange beard, the multicolored skin tones, the blue tie and above all the network of small red, green and blue dashes which enliven the background.

  • The green gaze directed towards the viewer
  • The orange-red beard
  • The forehead constructed in light touches
  • The blue tie and the white collar
  • The blue background punctuated with red and green
