Portrait du docteur Rey, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · January 1889 · Arles
Portrait of Doctor Félix Rey, F500Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Félix Rey, a young intern who treated Van Gogh after the crisis of December 1888, appeared in a blue jacket in front of green and orange wallpaper; his frontal face acquires an almost decorative intensity.
Look at the work
The doctor facing a background of arabesques
Rey is framed at mid-body, shoulders slightly turned but face forward. Her deep blue jacket, closed with two orange buttons, opens with a white collar and a pink tie. The red signature is placed diagonally on the reverse.
The background wallpaper combines emerald green and orange arabesques. The facial features - eyebrows, mustache, goatee - are surrounded by blue and green. Physiognomonic precision matters less than the confrontation between the pale yellow head, the blue garment and the vibrant decor.
Van Gogh offers the portrait to Félix Rey in gratitude for the care received at the Arles hospital. The canvas is painted between his return to the Yellow House and the letter of January 17, 1889 in which he mentions this gift.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Pushkin Museum preserves the work under number 0-3272 and confirms the oil on canvas of 64 × 53 cm, dated 1889.
A very constructed face
The arched eyebrows, blue eyes, mustache and goatee form a clear design that holds up against the agitation of the background.
Blue versus orange
The dark jacket concentrates the bust; buttons, arabesques and orange signature create complementary accents.
Active wallpaper
The green decor opens no depth. Its curves surround the head and give the portrait the strength of a poster.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
References F500/JH1659 distinguish this portrait of the Arles doctor from effigies of patients and caregivers later produced in Saint-Rémy.
Felix Rey
A young doctor at Arles hospital, Rey participated in Van Gogh's care after his crisis in December 1888.
A painted thank you
Van Gogh gives the painting to the doctor. This gesture links the portrait to a specific relationship rather than to an official order.
α-3272
