Look at the work

A color merchant who became a wise Japanese

Tanguy occupies the center in a frontal and motionless pose. His bearded face, clasped hands and work jacket form a calm mass.

Around it, geishas, the landscape of Mount Fuji, flowers and branches create a depthless background. The reds, greens and yellows of the prints respond to the touches of the portrait.

Painted in Paris in the fall of 1887, the Portrait of Father Tanguy is F363/JH1351. This oil on canvas measuring 92 × 73 cm is kept at the Rodin Museum under number P.07302.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh combines frontal portraiture, the neo-impressionist touch and his admiration for Japanese prints to express the quiet goodness of the model.

01

Pose creates stability

The symmetrical bust and crossed hands give Tanguy the meditative appearance of an old sage.

02

The bottom removes depth

Juxtaposed prints act as a colorful mosaic rather than the actual wall of a shop.

03

Complementaries are circulating

Blues of the jacket, oranges of the face, reds and greens of the images respond to each other across the entire surface.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Rodin Museum notice documents the model, his shop, the three portraits painted by Van Gogh and the artists' common taste for Japan.

Model

Julien-Francois Tanguy

"Father Tanguy" sold and crushed colors, sometimes accepting paintings in exchange for supplies.

Series

The second of three portraits

F363 is the large version of the Rodin Museum, separate from F263 in Copenhagen and F364 in private collection.

Provenance

A work acquired by Rodin

Tanguy never wanted to part with the portrait; Auguste Rodin acquired it after the merchant's death.
