Look at the work

A blue profile, motionless in front of a vibrant background

The girl is depicted up to her knees and looks strictly to the right. The orange-red back traces a vertical behind her back. The ribbon holds her blonde hair at the nape of her neck, and the high collar extends the contour of the face.

The dark background is entirely covered with small blue and purple touches. On the dress, the features become longer and follow the sleeves, the bust then the vast fold of the knees. Pale hands, placed one on top of the other, close the diagonal of the body.

The restraint of the pose contrasts with the activity of the brush: Adeline remains motionless while the blue circulates around her and in her clothes.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This sheet corresponds precisely to version F769: a large vertical portrait in seated foot, on a red chair, kept in a private collection.

01

The F769 version

Van Gogh painted several portraits of Adeline. F769 measures 73.7 × 54.7 cm and shows the girl seated in profile; it should not be confused with the square bust F786 of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

02

A shades of blue

Background, ribbon and dress share the same colorful family, but change value and direction. The orange accents of the chair prevent the silhouette from blending into the whole.

03

Very present hands

The face and hands are the main light areas. Their calm position and elongated contours give the portrait its silent concentration.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Portrait F769, also cataloged JH2037, was painted in Auvers in June 1890. It belongs to a private collection.

Model

The innkeeper's daughter

Adeline was the daughter of Arthur-Gustave Ravoux, owner of the inn where Van Gogh stayed in Auvers. She was thirteen years old at the time of the sessions.

Series

Three distinct portraits

Van Gogh created two large profiles in a private collection and then a square variation today in Cleveland. The framing and background of these versions are not interchangeable.

These numbers confirm the vertical version with the red chair and the body visible up to the knees, reproduced on this page.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must respect the full vertical framing, straight profile, red chair and blue variations specific to F769, without borrowing details from the square version of Cleveland.

  • Adeline's clean profile and the ribbon tied at the back of her neck
  • The orange-red vertical of the chair back
  • The little blue-black touches of the background
  • The exact pose of the two clear hands on the knees

A deep vertical portrait, dominated by blue
