Portrait d'Armand Roulin, par Vincent van Gogh

Portrait of Armand Roulin, F493Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Wearing a large blue-black hat, Armand Roulin appears in a dark suit and white tie in front of an intense green; his mustache down and his lowered gaze fix the precise age of a seventeen-year-old teenager.
Look at the work
The postman's son in a silent pose
Armand is shown mid-bust, facing left, shoulders almost parallel to the lower edge. The large hat casts a cold shadow on the forehead and reinforces the isolation of the face.
The dark silhouette is cut by firm blue contours. The white shirt and tie brighten the center, while the green background brings out the pinks and ochres of the complexion.
Van Gogh became friends with Joseph Roulin, a postal worker in Arles, then painted each member of his family. Armand, his seventeen-year-old son, was then an apprentice blacksmith.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Rotterdam Museum keeps this oil on canvas under 2608 (MK). It measures 65.5 × 54.3 cm and corresponds to F493/JH1643.
An almost still profile
The turned head and lowered gaze give the portrait an adolescent reserve. No accessory distracts attention from this expression.
Green as a counterpoint
The continuous green background contrasts its light with the black blues of the costume and intensifies the little red touches of the face.
Japanese-inspired outlines
The museum connects the simplification of forms and firm lines to Van Gogh's interest in Japanese prints, reinforced by his exchanges with Gauguin.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The official notice identifies Armand, his age and his place in all the portraits of the Roulin family.
Armand Roulin, seventeen years old
Born in 1871, he is the eldest son of postman Joseph Roulin and already wears the light mustache down noted by Van Gogh.
A whole family portrayed
Van Gogh painted Joseph, Augustine and their three children, Camille, Armand and baby Marcelle, during his stay in Arles.
Acquired with the Van Beuningen collection
The museum came into possession of the painting in 1958 with a large part of the collection of DG van Beuningen.
