Look at the work

The owner of the Café de la Gare facing the painter

The model is framed at mid-bust, almost frontal, with the head slightly raised. The blue-black jacket forms a stable triangular mass under the face, while the white tie concentrates the light in the center.

The lime green background is placed in short circular touches around the head. Van Gogh contrasts this light vibration with the black hair, thick eyebrows and large dark areas of the costume.

Joseph-Michel Ginoux and his wife Marie ran the Café de la Gare in Arles. Van Gogh rented a room there before being able to settle in the Yellow House and became close to the couple.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves this portrait under KM 103.189; the canvas measures 65.3 × 54.4 cm and bears the references F533/JH1649.

01

A half-closed look

Heavy eyelids and raised chin give Ginoux a distant expression. Van Gogh models this physiognomy with greens, ochres and browns rather than with a naturalistic gradient.

02

A yellow-green halo

The touches on the background follow the silhouette of the head and create a profane halo. Yellow-green intensifies both warm complexion and black hair.

03

Sunday outfit

Dark jacket, vest, white collar and carefully tied tie feature Ginoux in his neatest clothes, far from a daily work portrait.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The official notice formally identifies the model and links the painting to Van Gogh's friendship with the Ginoux couple.

Model

Joseph-Michel Ginoux

A former railway guard turned cafe owner, Ginoux runs the Café de la Gare with his wife, Place Lamartine in Arles.

Context

Housing before the Yellow House

On his arrival in Arles, Van Gogh took board in this café. Ginoux then helps him rent and arrange the nearby Yellow House.

Lighting

Probably painted in the evening

The museum offers a night session in the light of gas, a hypothesis consistent with the yellow-green halo and the very colorful shadows of the face.

  • Eyelids half closed
  • The black line at the top of the forehead
  • The tied white tie
  • The blue black jacket
  • The yellow-green halo around the face
