Look at the work

The meadow becomes a moving surface where grass reflects the sky

The field occupies almost two thirds of the canvas. The trees at the bottom form a discontinuous frieze; their modest size leaves the feeling of a vast open space.

Emerald green, light blue, mauve, yellow and pink are distributed in small superimposed touches. The cold areas of the meadow sometimes seem to be flowers, sometimes reflections of light.

The landscape seems simple, but its depth is due to a very precise orchestration: wide touches in front, vibrant trees in the middle and almost weightless sky.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately extended first plan

The meadow imposes its rhythm before the gaze even reaches the trees. This choice gives the ordinary pattern a panoramic amplitude.

02

A continuous massless frieze of trees

Each group has a different color and height. The openings between the trunks prevent the background from closing the stage.

03

The version that follows W1198

In the catalog raisonné, W1199 comes immediately after the Limetz Prairie. The mist gives way to clearer light and more saturated colors.

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1199 is used. The real WebP measures 1000 × 691 px and maintains the best definition available without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the blues in the middle of the greens

They create grass movement and connect the meadow to the sky. A uniform green cast would make the scene flat.

Color02

Store trees in distinct colors

Mauves, yellows, pinks and greens should remain noticeable without producing harsh contours.

Matter03

Keep the sky light

Its simplicity gives all its intensity to the field. A more contrasting sky would distract attention from the meadow.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Kreeger Museum preserves Prairie in Giverny, oil on canvas from 1888, approximately 65 × 92 cm, signed lower right, inventory 1967.10 and Wildenstein 1199.

Collection01

The Kreeger Museum, Washington

The work was acquired by David and Carmen Kreeger in 1967 and has inventory number 1967.10.

Location02

The meadows around Giverny

Based in Giverny since 1883, Monet observed the land near his house long before the water garden became his dominant motif.

Version03

The Wildenstein 1199 canvas

Its very extensive blue-green field, its multicolored tree line and its signature at the bottom right allow it to be precisely identified.
