À propos de l’œuvre

La Plage à Trouville, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A seaside walk in 1870 · Wadsworth Atheneum

The Beach in Trouville W156hand painted reproduction

A boardwalk heads towards the sea between summer visitors and the large hotels of Trouville. The dresses, parasols and frock coats appear in quick touches, while the turquoise green staircases and railings impose a very constructed perspective. Monet captures less a portrait of the resort than a circulation: that of walkers, the sea air and the light on the facades.

Look at the work

The boards lead from the foreground to the sea

The gray and pink slats enter from the bottom edge and tighten towards the center. Couples and groups occupy this path, without ever forming a regular procession. On the left, a few figures leave the promenade to approach the sand and the blue line of the English Channel.

Hotels stack to the right, behind gardens and balconies. Their pink, cream and gray-blue facades rise to a dark spire. A large green staircase cuts the foreground at an angle; further on, other ramps and awnings repeat its color and organize access between the terraces and the beach.

The rhythm of the boards, stairs and silhouettes makes the walk an open theater where everyone passes through the light without interrupting the landscape.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A perspective guided by the slats

The long lines of the passage converge towards the central area. They measure depth while leaving the sky and beach open on the left.

02

Architecture concentrated in one side only

Hotels occupy the right and gradually rise. This weight is balanced by the large expanse of blue-gray sky which covers almost the entire left half.

03

Figures described by attitude and color

Monet does not isolate faces. A black spot, an umbrella white or a blue coat are enough to distinguish walkers and suggest their movement.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference corresponds to the 1948.116 inventory of the Wadsworth Atheneum. The 3,600 × 2,988 px file was reduced to 3,000 × 2,490 px, without enlargement, then converted to high definition WebP.

Composition01

The green ramp as the first landmark

The large staircase on the right suddenly enters the frame. Its diagonal and turquoise color bring the viewer closer before the boards drag them towards the bottom.

Color02

A nuanced sky despite its magnitude

Pearl blue, mauve gray and cream white mix in wide passages. This calm surface highlights the colorful density of hotels and figures.

Matter03

A more precise touch on buildings

Roofs, windows and fireplaces use small accents. Walkers and the sky remain freer, which maintains the sensation of observation taken from life.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measuring 54 × 64.8 cm, dated 1870, is registered at the Wadsworth Atheneum under number 1948.116 and classified Wildenstein 156.

Stay01

Trouville during the summer 1870

Monet joins the Normandy resort with Camille and their son Jean. The beach, hotels and Parisian clientele provide him with motifs where seascape and modern life meet.

Support02

An earlier composition below the surface

Studies devoted to the canvas indicate that it was painted on a first composition. This reuse helps to understand certain visible variations in the material and recalls the very direct practice of the painter.

Acquisition03

The Sumner Fund in 1948

The Wadsworth Atheneum acquired the work through the Ella Gallup Sumner and Mary Catlin Sumner Collection Fund. It has since had the inventory number 1948.116.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the convergence of the boards and the large diagonal of the green staircase.
  • Maintain figures as quick accents, without artificially detailing faces.
  • Differentiate between pink, cream and blue-gray facades under marine light.
  • Maintain balance between wide open skies and dense architecture on the right.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This bright scene from Normandy brings air and a discreet human presence to a living room, entrance or seaside house. An off-white, light oak or verdigris setting accompanies the ramps and the sky.
