Barges à charbon, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1888 · Arles, Rhône
Coal bars on the Rhône, F437Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two large barges loaded with coal occupy the Rhône under an orange-yellow sky; on the bank, small silhouettes work in front of the dark mass of the hulls and their colorful reflections.
Look at the work
Port work in the light of Arles
The barges form two oblique volumes which extend towards the opposite bank. A footbridge and a few figures connect the water surface to the activity of the quay.
Blues, greens and purples describe the water around the brown hulls. The warm sky and the orange-yellow quay bring out the almost black coal.
Painted in Arles in August 1888, this oil on canvas measuring 71 × 95 cm is cataloged F437/JH1570. Today it belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh transforms an industrial motif into a construction of complementary colors. The mass of coal opposes the light of the sky, while the water fragments the reflections.
The hulls organize the depth
Their parallel diagonals lead from the foreground towards the workers and the bank.
The coal becomes a chromatic mass
Brown, black, blue and purple give volume to the cargo without descriptive detail.
Water connects colors
The green, blue and orange touches take up the barges, the sky and the quay.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F437/JH1570 must be distinguished from Men unloading coal barges F438/JH1571 and from the Quay to sand barges F449/JH1558.
F437/JH1570
The large canvas of 71 × 95 cm represents the barges from the river and not a close-up unloading scene.
Several views of the port
In Arles, Van Gogh studied hulls, quays, workers and reflections from different points of view.
Special conservation
The catalog consulted associates the work with the old Carleton Mitchell collection in Annapolis.
