Butterfly Herbage, F672Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh looks down at a patch of tall grass where a few white butterflies appear between the stems. Without sky or horizon, the painting envelops the viewer in a network of greens, yellows, blues and purples.

Look at the work

A meadow observed at grass height

The vegetation fills almost the entire canvas and seems to extend out of the frame. Near the upper edge, an oblique path and the bases of a few trees or shrubs introduce a discreet depth without opening a real horizon.

The long touches in the foreground shorten as they rise in the image. Green and yellow grasses are crossed with white, ocher, blue, lilac and purple; butterflies read like small, clear breaks.

Butterfly Herbage F672 is an oil on canvas measuring 64.5 × 80.7 cm, painted in Saint-Rémy in 1890. It is kept at the National Gallery in London under number NG4169.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The National Gallery links this view to studies of small plots of meadow and undergrowth carried out within the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole enclosure. Van Gogh transforms an area of ordinary grass into a continuous visual field.

01

Lack of horizon brings the ground closer

The viewer does not look at a distant landscape but at a plant surface located right in front of him. The frame cuts through the tufts and suggests that the meadow continues on all sides.

02

The length of the keys creates the distance

In the foreground, the strands are formed by long and distinct lines. Higher up, the keys become short, almost punctual, and move the meadow back.

03

Butterflies punctuate the movement

A few white accents stand out in the middle of the stems. They do not dominate the scene: they force the eye to patiently scan all the vegetation.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must respect the skyless framing, the upper path, the variation in length of the keys, the lilac and blue passages and the small white butterflies.

  • The framing entirely filled with vegetation
  • The oblique path near the top edge
  • The long touches in the foreground
  • Greens mixed with blue and purple
  • The scattered white butterflies
