At the confluence of the two Creuses, the steep slopes close around dark blue water under an overcast sky. Painted in Fresselines in 1889, this oil on canvas measuring 73.5 × 92.5 cm is kept at the Von der Heydt-Museum under the number G 1235 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1224.

The two rivers meet between almost mineral slopes

A dark bank descends from the left, while the opposite slope occupies the entire center. The water enters through the lower right edge then turns towards the bottom. This narrow curve makes you feel the depth of the ravine without an open horizon.

Blue, green, purple and red-brown intertwine on the slopes. Dark weather cools distant planes, but touches of orange and pink remain in the nearby vegetation. The water takes up the blues of the relief rather than those of an invisible sky.

In W1224, bad weather does not tarnish the valley: it brings the blues, greens and reds together until it makes the ravine a single vibrant mass.

The river must remain steep and follow its bend towards the bottom. A surface that is too light or too wide would modify the perceived height of the slopes.

Keep the reds in the vegetation

Red and pink tones warm the left bank and certain strata of the ravine. They prevent the covered landscape from becoming uniformly blue-green.

Matter03

Differentiate the two sides

The nearby bank receives stronger contrasts; the large central slope becomes bluer and diffuse. This nuance establishes depth despite the density of the touch.
