A single pole of pink and cream gladiolus rises from a small glazed vase placed at the lower edge. The long green leaves accentuate the verticality, while a pinkish-brown background without depth isolates the flower as on a decorative panel. This oil on canvas measuring 100.4 × 41.5 cm, painted in 1881, is kept at the Pola Museum of Art under number 997-0056 and corresponds to Wildenstein 695.

A single flower in a kakemono format

The vase takes up very little space at the bottom of the canvas. From its round shape come three long leaves and a thin stem, crowned by a tight bouquet of pale flowers. The void surrounding the pattern matters as much as the plant itself.

The background combines terracotta, brown and mauve in soft passages. The petals mix off-white, pink and light yellow; the leaves are drawn by a few deep greens. The vase brings together red, green and black in brilliant touches.

By reducing still life to a pole, a few leaves and a vase, Monet transforms the flower into a line, the bottom into a breath and the format into a decorative object.
