The proportions of 100.4 × 41.5 cm require reading from bottom to top. The flower does not fill the space: it activates it with its slender silhouette.

Claude Monet · Gladiolus · 1881 · W695
A single pole of pink and cream gladiolus rises from a small glazed vase placed at the lower edge. The long green leaves accentuate the verticality, while a pinkish-brown background without depth isolates the flower as on a decorative panel. This oil on canvas measuring 100.4 × 41.5 cm, painted in 1881, is kept at the Pola Museum of Art under number 997-0056 and corresponds to Wildenstein 695.

Look at the work
The vase takes up very little space at the bottom of the canvas. From its round shape come three long leaves and a thin stem, crowned by a tight bouquet of pale flowers. The void surrounding the pattern matters as much as the plant itself.
The background combines terracotta, brown and mauve in soft passages. The petals mix off-white, pink and light yellow; the leaves are drawn by a few deep greens. The vase brings together red, green and black in brilliant touches.
By reducing still life to a pole, a few leaves and a vase, Monet transforms the flower into a line, the bottom into a breath and the format into a decorative object.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The proportions of 100.4 × 41.5 cm require reading from bottom to top. The flower does not fill the space: it activates it with its slender silhouette.
The unique pattern, reduced depth and large background reserve evoke the Japanese hanging paintings that Monet collected and studied.
Monet produced two neighboring versions, W694 and W695, today at the Pola Museum. Their presentation at the seventh impressionist exhibition affirmed his interest in floral decoration.
Reference image
A single exact image of W695 is used throughout the file and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 620 × 1,500 px and comes from the museum image without artificial enlargement.
Filling or detailing the background would destroy the decorative balance and delicacy of W695.
It must guide the gaze without becoming a hard and regular line.
Its reds, greens and blacks concentrate the material at the bottom of the composition and balance the lightness of the petals.
Documented benchmarks
The Pola Museum of Art documents Gladiolus, oil on canvas from 1881, 100.4 × 41.5 cm, inventory 997-0056 and Wildenstein catalog 695.
The museum also keeps W694, slightly smaller. The two panels feature the same flower, the same low vase and a vertical organization inspired by Japanese art.
The two Gladioli appear in the seventh impressionist exhibition, where Monet presents landscapes and still lifes from his period in Vétheuil.
As early as 1882, Monet painted a series of door panels dedicated to flowers and fruits for Paul Durand-Ruel. The narrowness of W695 announces this decorative research.
