The figures, parasols and flowers give a visible shape to the wind

The man dressed in gray stands slightly to the left of center; Camille, in a white dress, advances to her right. Their dark umbrellas form two irregular discs under the sky. Further down, Jean appears as a small figure wearing red hair near the foliage.

The field rises almost to halfway and is covered with touches of red, pink, yellow and blue. On the right, the mass of a large tree balances the figures; on the left, the very low horizon opens the landscape. The gray-white clouds are painted with the same fragmented movement as the flowers and leaves.

Walkers do not dominate nature: clothes, umbrellas and gestures become colored events in the middle of the field.

Monet seeks neither the detailed portrait of Camille nor the precise identity of the man. The figures are reduced to their size relationships, their positions and a few colors which animate the landscape.

Two umbrellas under a changing sky

The dark shapes of the umbrellas stand out against the clouds and signal uncertain weather. Their inclination, combined with the movement of the dress, makes the air passing through the stage perceptible.

The field as a real first subject

The touches of flowers occupy a large part of the surface and lead to the characters. They do not describe each plant, but create a vibration of pure colors characteristic of impressionism.

Blues, pinks, greens and grays shape Camille's clothing. A pure and continuous white would detach her too strongly from the field in which Monet blends her.

Flowers vary in size and density

The touches are stronger in the foreground then tighten towards the horizon. Their irregular distribution avoids the decorative sowing effect and maintains depth.

Matter03

The right tree remains crossed by sky

Its dark mass frames walkers, but numerous blue and light openings appear between the leaves. They maintain the air and prevent the foliage from closing the composition.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1875, this oil on canvas measuring 61 × 81.4 cm is signed Claude Monet at the bottom right. It is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under inventory 5332 and listed as Wildenstein 379a.

The museum recognizes Monet's wife and son, but does not give a name to the third walker. All three remain secondary to the field, the sky and the wind effect.

The Marmottan notice presents the canvas as an emblematic work: study on the motif, indistinct contours and colorful flowers produce a luminous and bucolic vision of nature.

Collection03

Gift of Nelly Sergeant-Duhem in 1985

The work entered the Marmottan Monet museum thanks to this donation and received the inventory number 5332. It completes the numerous views of Argenteuil preserved by the institution.
