The Village of La Roche-Blond, evening effect W1238hand painted reproduction

A clear path winds down a green, red slope to the dark houses of La Roche-Blond, cut out in front of a pale yellow evening sky. Painted during the Creuse campaign in 1889, this oil on canvas measuring 73.9 × 92.8 cm is kept at the Art Museum of Mie Prefecture and corresponds to Wildenstein 1238.

Look at the work

The path leads to a village almost absorbed by the hill

The river forms a narrow strip in the foreground, then the slope occupies most of the canvas. The path climbs in bends towards the ridge line, where a few roofs and trees appear in irregular silhouettes.

Olive green, red brown, blue gray and ocher overlap on the slope. The yellow and pink sky is lighter than the village; this backlight effect reduces the constructions to a few masses while revealing the material of the land.

In W1238, the village is not the bright center: it is the path that guides the eye through a slope gained by shadow.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A composition dominated by earth

The sky remains high but the hill rises to the middle of the format. This frontal mass gives the hamlet the appearance of an inhabited edge placed on the relief.

02

The path as a common thread

Its pale line begins near the river, disappears then reappears to the summit. It introduces a depth that the large flat areas of the slope might otherwise close.

03

An evening effect without visible sun

The light is concentrated behind the ridge. The greens darken, the roofs become almost black and the pink touches of the sky suggest the end of the day.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1238 is used. The real WebP measures 1,250 × 987 px and maintains the best reliable public definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the discontinuous route of the path

The trail should not become a regular white line. Its interruptions and variations in thickness naturally integrate it into the relief.

Color02

Preserve the earthy greens of the slope

Olive green, brown and red must remain distinct. A slope that is too uniformly green would cause the evening effect and richness of the touch to be lost.

Matter03

Keep the village in measured silhouette

Roofs must be readable by zoom but without invented architectural detail. Their simplicity is desired by the backlight.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Art Museum of Mie Prefecture documents The Village of La Roche-Blond, evening effect, oil on canvas from 1889, 73.9 × 92.8 cm, signed and dated Claude Monet 89 lower left.

Campaign01

Three months in the Creuse valley

Monet stayed around Fresselines in the spring of 1889 and painted twenty-four canvases despite the rain, the cold and the rapid evolution of the vegetation.

Series02

Light observed on a stable pattern

The village of La Roche-Blond appears under several effects. W1238 can be recognized by its pale sky, its dark slope and the winding path that goes up towards the ridge.

Collection03

Donation from the Okada Cultural Foundation

The museum notice states that the work entered the collection through the Cultural Foundation of Okada.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1238 version
  • The winding path on the slope
  • The silhouette houses on the ridge
  • The yellow and pink sky of the evening effect
