A pink sun attempts to pass through a sheet of green and blue fog above the Thames. The Charing Cross bridge becomes almost invisible; a dark boat and the reflection of the star are enough to structure the space. The Fogg Museum preserves this painting under the inventory 1979.329, Wildenstein 1554.

A pink sun and a bridge almost erased by fog

The bridge forms a very low horizontal line, interrupted by mist. On the left, a diffuse vertical suggests a chimney; in the foreground, the boat slides in the pink reflection. These few marks prevent the space from dissolving entirely.

The upper half mixes pale blue and denser green around the sun. In the water, the same colors become more horizontal and deeper. The warm reflection connects the star to the boat with a series of small light touches.

W1554 reduces London to three signs - a sun, a bridge line and a boat - wrapped in an immense expanse of color.

Harvard Art Museums documents a 1903 oil on canvas measuring 73.7 × 92.4 cm. The work, donated to the Fogg Museum by Mrs. Henry Lyman, corresponds to Wildenstein 1554.

The view from the Savoy Hotel

Monet observes Charing Cross Bridge from the Savoy, facing upstream of the Thames. The railway bridge, chimneys and boats change appearance depending on the density of the fog.

Work continued in the workshop

London studies begun there in 1899, 1900 and 1901 were repeated at length in Giverny. Monet seeks reporting less than the exact coherence of an atmospheric sensation.

An almost absent horizon

The bridge line must remain very weak. Strengthening it too much would remove the impression that architecture is absorbed by air and water.

Color02

Milky blue, mist green and pink

Green forms an irregular halo around the sun. Pink remains concentrated in the star and its reflection, creating the only warm contrast of the scene.

Matter03

Thin, veiled layers

The material is more melted than in the Millstones or Cathedrals. Visible repeats accumulate without closing the shapes, which gives the fog its depth.
