Look at the work

A purple bridge suspended between warm reflections and London fog

The railway deck cuts the canvas above the center. Its dark purple piles extend into the water, but their reflections are broken up by horizontal touches of salmon pink, orange and gray blue. A small boat and a few dense accents give the scale of the river.

On the right, the towers of Parliament appear as a very light blue silhouette. Monet contrasts this almost faded architecture with the firmer piers of the bridge and the bright color of the foreground. The depth is thus born from a progressive reduction in contrasts.

In this version, the mist does not extinguish the color: it transforms the bridge, the city and the water into three degrees of the same purple-pink light.

The bridge remains readable thanks to the density differences between mauve, purple and blue. The edges must remain irregular so that the architecture belongs to the atmosphere.

A Thames built in crossed touches

The vertical descents of the piles are interrupted by hot and cold horizontal gestures. This crossing avoids a symmetrical reflection and gives movement to the water.

Parliament as a measure of distance

The silhouette on the right is deliberately paler and colder than the bridge. Reinforcing it would cause the particular aerial depth of this composition to be lost.

The Wildenstein 1536 version

This oil on canvas of 73 × 100 cm is signed and dated Claude Monet 1903 lower left. The Christie's notice links it to views begun in London between 1900 and 1901 then completed in Giverny.

Conservation02

From the Yoshino Gypsum collection in Yamagata

The work belongs to the Yoshino Gypsum collection and is on permanent loan to the Yamagata Museum of Art, Japan. Wildenstein number 1536 distinguishes this version from other Charing Cross Bridges.

Provenance03

Documented traffic from Paris

The published provenance includes the Durand-Ruel galleries in Paris and New York, then several private collections. The work was sold at Christie's in New York on May 14, 1985.
