The Japanese Bridge, Givernyhand painted reproduction

In this late version, the arch of the Japanese bridge is almost swallowed up by a red, pink, green and yellow garden. The reserves of light canvas pass through the material and give air to a composition where the pond, plants and wood of the bridge no longer separate clearly.

Look at the work

An arch still readable in the middle of a garden that has become a network of colors

The bridge occupies the center in the form of a green and red-brown curve. Its structure is never closed by a continuous outline: light verticals pass in front of the opening and touches of foliage cut the arch. The depth rests on this superposition rather than on a drawn perspective.

The bottom of the canvas concentrates coral reds, pinks and some acidic yellows, placed in more horizontal bands to evoke water. At the top, the keys become sinuous and vertical. The areas of light canvas are not gaps to fill: they contribute to the vibration of this precise version.

The familiar pattern is not erased: Monet makes it appear in fragments, at the exact point where the arch, reflections and vegetation begin to share the same material.

An arch built in colorful fragments

Deep greens and red browns should remain discontinuous. Properly redrawing the curve would destroy the balance between the bridge and the plants passing in front of it.

Clear active reserves

The light bottom crosses the branches and the pelvis. Faithful reproduction preserves these breaths and avoids uniformly filling each interval with paint.

A red pool rather than blue

Coral and pink horizontals dominate the water, with only a few greens and yellows. This late choice gives the work its warmth and must be preserved without artificial saturation.

Inventory 5093 of the Marmottan Monet Museum

This oil on canvas of 89 × 100 cm is dated 1918 -1924. It is listed under Wildenstein number 1928 and is not signed.

Late series02

The bridge recaptured after the first views in 1899

Monet returned intensely to the Japanese bridge at the end of his life. The arch then becomes a point of support within denser, freer and much less descriptive compositions.

Transmission03

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

Remaining in the artist's family, the painting entered the Marmottan Monet Museum with the bequest of Michel Monet, son of Claude Monet, in 1966.
