Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1904 · NGA 1983.1.27 · W1564
In the twilight light, Waterloo Bridge becomes a long purple line placed on a sea green Thames. The vehicles form small pink and white flashes, while the south bank dissolves in mist. The Washington canvas is inventory 1983.1.27, Wildenstein 1564.

Look at the work
The apron crosses almost the entire width of the canvas and organizes a very low composition. Its arches repeat without becoming perfectly regular: the mist absorbs certain pillars and opens the view towards the buildings on the opposite bank.
Monet contrasts a cold - mint, turquoise, lavender - atmosphere with tiny warm accents on the deck. The vertical touches of the south bank and the horizontal marks of the water give two distinct rhythms to the same colorful range.
W1564 doesn't just describe a bridge: it measures how much city London's fog still reveals at dusk.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The work measures 65.7 × 101.6 cm, bears the signature Claude Monet at the bottom right and corresponds to Wildenstein number 1564. It belongs to the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon.
Monet observes Waterloo Bridge from a high chamber in the Savoy, on the north bank of the Thames. The bird's eye view allows it to lay out the river, bridge and south bank without showing very developed skies.
The painter worked on site in 1899, 1900 and 1901, then continued the paintings at length in the studio. The date 1904 corresponds to the completion and exhibition of the series at Durand-Ruel.

The bridge appears almost parallel to the edge of the canvas, but its discreet rightward escape retains depth. The arches should not become too sharp a geometric pattern.
Cool colors wrap the whole thing. The little pink accents of traffic gain their intensity through contrast and must remain punctual.
The buildings and chimneys on the south bank are vertical traces, not jagged shapes. The material must make them emerge and then disappear into the mist.
Documented benchmarks
The National Gallery of Art identifies this painting by the inventory 1983.1.27: 1904, 65.7 × 101.6 cm and Wildenstein 1564.
The dominant turquoise and pink traffic distinguish this state from versions in full sun, in dense fog or in more orange light.
The painting is kept in Washington and comes from the Mellon collection. Its inventory number accompanies the notice and the open access image of the NGA.
Waterloo Bridge forms one of Monet's three major London complexes, with Charing Cross Bridge and Parliament. Everyone explores the city through the atmosphere.
