Meules de foin sous un ciel pluvieux, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · October 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Wheatgrass under a cloudy skyReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A large golden millstone stands behind a deep blue puddle, under a sky swept by clouds. The current Kroeller-Müller notice links this scene to the enclosed field of the Saint-Rémy asylum, in October 1889.
Look at the work
After the downpour, a millstone facing the wind
The millstone occupies the center like a low, compact mass. Its yellow, orange and brown lines follow the curve of the collected grain. A second small millstone appears on the right, behind a rectangle of blue-green terrain.
In the foreground, a large puddle reflects the blue of the sky and the black birds passing through the image. The mostly oblique brushstrokes carry ground, water and clouds to the left, while a strip of wall remains visible on the right edge.
The stability of the grinding wheel resists an entire landscape set in motion by wind, water and the diagonals of the fingerboard.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work KM 109.773 can be recognized by its central millstone, the blue puddle in the foreground, the crows and the fragment of the asylum wall visible on the right.
A millstone constructed in layers
The lines follow the rounded surface and change color from light yellow to brown. The shape appears dense without becoming a smooth volume.
Water as second heaven
The puddle takes the blues and grays from the top of the canvas. The birds are reflected there, which directly connects the foreground and airspace.
The wind written in the key
Repeated diagonals give a push to the left. This common direction animates the scene while reinforcing the stillness of the large millstone.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves the work under the inventory KM 109.773. Research on canvas weaving has moved its dating from July 1890 to October 1889 and its location from Auvers to Saint-Rémy.
A new dating
Comparison of the threads and the weaving pattern with other canvases showed that the painting belongs to the stay of Saint-Rémy, and not to the last weeks of Auvers.
The Closed Field of Asylum
Van Gogh knew this field from his room. Here, he enters the field then turns his gaze about a quarter turn, which hides the Alpilles.
A scene after heavy rain
The large puddle, the rapid clouds and their reflections indicate a ground still waterlogged. The museum also highlights the coherence of the keys with a wind coming from the right.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The painter must preserve the difference between the golden material of the millstone, the blue water of the foreground and the gray-green sky, as well as the diagonal momentum of the fingerboard.
- The large orange-yellow millstone and its irregular outline
- The blue puddle that occupies almost the entire foreground
- Black birds and their reflections in the water
- The wall fragment placed on the far right

A vertical landscape where gold meets storm blue
The yellow of the wheel warms the blues and grays. This dense palette is suitable for a living room, office or room with medium woods, unbleached textiles and slate blue walls.
